Introduction

The Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics – IBGE – provides the public with the channel Mapas Interativos, on the web site of the institution. This section is aimed at fulfilling the growing demand for georeferenced information, that is, information directly related to an area or geographic position.

The channel Mapas Interativos allows the user to Search, visualize and print maps which result from the surveys and studied conducted by this institution, and encompasses all the areas dealt with by the institute.

By making these products available on the Internet, IBGE contributes to the formation of a better-informed society, whose members will be, consequently, better prepared to make decisions which can affect their quality-of-life.
